Introduction

This fellowship was established by the Board of Direction of the Society in 1938 and was made possible by J. Waldo Smith, past Vice President and Hon.M.ASCE, who bequeathed funds to the Society

Eligibility

  1. At the time of application the individual must be a member of the Society and in good standing at the time of application and award.  Preference shall be given to Associate Members. 
  2. The fellowship may be awarded only to those students who will continue their formal graduate education in civil engineering.
  3. Previous recipients of the fellowship are eligible to apply in any succeeding competition for these awards provided the other requirements of eligibility are satisfied. 

How to apply

Complete applications are to be submitted to the ASCE Honors and Awards Program office for receipt by February 10 of the year of award.  Applications must include (1) completed application form; (2) personal essay on why the applicant should receive this fellowship.  The essay shall be no more than 500 words and shall highlight why the applicant chose to become a civil engineer, specific ASCE Student Chapter involvement, any special financial needs, and long term goals and plans; (3) description of the proposed research and its objectives: a statement from the institution at which the research is to be conducted indicating that the applicant and proposed research are acceptable to the institution must be included; (4) detailed financial statement indicating how this fellowship will help finance the applicant’s education and support your research.  Document the extent of financial need by indicating expenses and income from all sources.  Expenses shall include, but not be limited to: tuition, fees, books, living expenses (rent/mortgage, meals, and utilities) and miscellaneous expenses (commuting costs, car payments, insurance, previous loan balances).  Income should include any and all employment, other grants and loans, and parental or spousal support (5) minimum of two sealed letters of recommendation, one of which must be from a faculty member; (6) one sealed official transcript; (7) one- to two-page résumé.  Include honors, activities, organizations, ASCE activities (including any offices held), and any work experience
